Primitive antique wood millinery oval shape wood block hat form. Great as a display piece, or to hold and display a treasured hat. Its historical value makes it a must-have for collectors of antique items. The bottom is carved out so that the hat maker could hold it as he was blocking and shaping the hat, and center hole to place on a stand. Stamped 961, and 2, 1 1/2. Minor scratches, cracks, and wear consistent with age and use. Measures 7” tall and 7” x 5 3/4” across the bottom. Circumference 21 1/2" or US 6 3/4 hat size. Weight 2 lbs. 11 oz. Hat blocks have been used in men's hat-making for over 200 years. Early on they were used to make wigs, however, this changed in the early 1800s when wigs began to fall out of fashion. Hats now needed to fit to the true shape of their wearers' heads, so block-makers began carving their hat blocks by hand in a more oval shape.
